Our Villages, Our World: What Can We Offer?
During Chancellor Amma’s 60th Birthday Celebrations, an ambitious nation-wide initiative was launched to transform a significant number of India’s villages into centers of learning, employment, productivity, and prosperity via sustainable development. To mark this occasion, Amrita University hosted an International Summit that included speakers such as Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Nobel Laureate Dr. Leland Hartwell, Dr. Suresh Subramani (University of California, San Diego) and Dr. Vijay Bhatkar (Chairman, IIT – Delhi, Board of Governors). The speakers led a panel discussion on science, technology, health, public hygiene, education, entrepreneurship, governance, and administration. The exchange of information through meaningful discourse helped to expand the audience’s awareness on what could be done to raise the status of Indian villages from dependent, neglected sectors of society into thriving, self-reliant, and self-sustainable communities. Approximately 54 dignitaries and distinguished delegates attended the two-day summit.
